Childhood Dream Realized

In grade school I read about the exploits of a paleontologist in the Gobi Desert (Mongolia) who discovered petrified dinosaur eggs and other fossils. I dreamed of the day I could make such discoveries and visit far-off lands. Last year I heard about dinosaur footprints exposed along a stretch of river in southeast Colorado. La Junta, near the tracks, is a three hour drive from Satanta, Kansas, so the plan began to form. After I worked up enough stamina for a rigorous, long hike in a rugged terrain, I would go to the Picketwire Canyon Trailhead and walk where the ancient's walked. My wife, son and good friend John planned to go with me. John had to stay home because of illness, but the three of us arrived last Tuesday on the canyon's rim in the fog. The office receptionist for the Grassland Parks discouraged us from attempting to go there, because of recent rains. We went to check out the conditions and found them to be a little damp, but easily passable. Thus, the adventure began. Along the way we observed much wildlife: desert birds, tarantulas, a large centipede, small snakes migrating uphill and more. The scenery was breathtaking and fresh as the sky cleared and sun shone brightly. Three hours of walking put us in sight of the prints. My son and I crossed the river to see more prints while my wife enjoyed those on the other side of the river. We enjoyed nature, each other and the challenge of a long hike. Part of my childhood dream has now been realized. Next Mongolia?
