War costs in money and human lives. War also costs in terms of the environmental quality. I read that the greatest polluter in the world is our U.S. Department of Defense. "Pesticides, defoliants like Agent Orange, solvents, petroleum, lead, mercury, and depleted uranium are among the many deadly substances used by the military." All of these pollutants accompany the war machine. I do not question the need for a strong defense system. I question the unconscionable abuse and pollution of total ecosystems all in the name of defense. When will we wake up and find a brilliant new day of peace instead of a dark and stormy night?
