If the trucks ran short of fossil fuel and the supermarkets sold off their 3 days worth of food, is there anything to eat in your garden -- or on your patio or balcony? Or in your neighbor's yard?
I want my yard to look nice and I want to produce some of the food I consume bu growing it in my yard. So, planting landscape that can be used to supplement dinner seems very practical to me. It also helps people reconnect with the food they eat. I talked with a high school student about potatoes. He didn't realize potatoes are tubers that grow underground. He had never experienced them in their natural environment. Now, if his experience is similar to his peers, then we have many people who have never been in a typical garden and thus know little about where their food grows. This young man lives in a rural Kansas town of about 1000 people. Imagine how people in urban and suburban communities are disconnected from the soil and their food.
