Corny Experience

This week I decided to try something new. I walked down the rows of a corn field and laid on the ground with the stalks surrounding me. I had noticed that deer and coyotes just disappear into the corn field when they are threatened, so I wondered what it was like to disappear into the corn. Now, I realize that you may think that life is pretty slow in Satanta if I have to do such unusual activity. Yes, sometimes it is slow, but that is why I enjoy the pace. I can try new things.

My observations of the corn field experience include:
1. It seems to take longer to get out than in
2. It is safer to place arms protectively in front of the face while walking
3. There are fewer insects in the corn field than on the edges
4. Quieter and cooler in there
5. Corn has awesome stalks and roots--very sturdy
6. The ground, though damp, is not muddy (depends on when irrigated)
7. The "lost-in-the-forest" feeling causes some claustrophobia
8. Animals on all fours can see through the stalks better than animals on two feet

I want to do it again on a very hot day to see if the coolness factor holds up. I drive pass acres of corn fields all the time, but this is the first time I experienced one intimately.

  1. I think you are on to some real wisdom from the corn field. I particularly like the idea that it takes less time to get into something than it does to get out of something.
